Assisted living facilities with 17 or more beds must have an AED on site and staff trained in its use. Facilities are encouraged, not required, to register the AED with the local emergency medical services director. The bill also contains wording to extend the immunity provided by Florida’s Good Samaritan law and AED law to the staff in these facilities. The bill placed no restrictions on the training that can be used but also called on the Department of Elderly Affairs to adopt rules relating to the use of AEDs in these facilities.

Florida enacted House Bill 945 in the current legislative session outlining new requirements related to automated external defibrillators (AEDs). The new law took effect July 1, 2010; the devices must be in place by July 1, 2011.
